It is widely believed that cats, at least online, are way more beloved than dogs.
It seemed very strange to me, since most of the people I know usually prefer dogs over cats. Having some free time, and some programming knowledge, I decided to test this belief.
I went ahead and setup 2 sites: catRate.com – where you rate pictures of cats, and DogsRate.com – where you rate pictures of dogs.
Both sites are very much alike – you upload a picture, or several picture of your pet, and everyone that enters the site can rate the pictures in a random order, from 1 paw to 5 paws.
Simple enough to get people to use it.
I gave both sites the same exposure and waited for the results.
There was no surprise there – the kittens took the puppies with now problem. CatRate got many more hits that DogsRate.
So yes – cats are more beloved than dogs online.
But why? Why do people love cats more than dogs when it comes to the internet, but in real life, at least from what I’m seeing, dogs are more beloved?
Perhaps cats are cuter – so watching pictures of them is better than puppies pictures. But cats are also more indifferent than dogs, so people prefer having a dog.
Some statistics: over a period of few weeks, around 100 pictures opf cat and kittens were uploaded, but only around 20 pictures of dogs.
There were about 4 times the facebook shares in CatRate.com than in DogsRate.com.
On average, each cat got 3.5 paws, while on average each dog got 3.2 paws. But I’m not entirly sure what that last statistics means.
I’m going to let the sites develope a bit further so I could have more data and better statistics in the coming weeks and months.
I know it’s not a very scientific research, but still, it’s a nice test on human behavior.
